Representative Mike Collins defeated former college football coach Derek Dooley in Tuesday's Republican Senate primary runoff in Georgia. The Trump-backed candidate will face Democratic incumbent Senator Jon Ossoff in November. In the gubernatorial race, businessman Rick Jackson upset Trump-endorsed Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones.
Collins secured the nomination with 55.5 percent of the vote to Dooley's 44.5 percent. The victory came after a contentious campaign that featured attacks on Collins's ethics record and past social media posts.
Ossoff immediately criticized Collins as a "notorious bigot, antisemite, and extremist currently under federal investigation for the illegal misuse of tax dollars." The Democrat highlighted Collins's votes on health insurance premiums and tariffs.
Jackson defeated Jones after spending over $100 million of his own money. The self-funded candidate will now face former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms in the general election for governor.
Both races set up expensive contests this fall, with Ossoff holding a large fundraising advantage and national groups preparing to spend heavily in Georgia.
