Former Formula 1 driver Juan Pablo Montoya says Williams could need to abandon parts of its 2027 development to address shortcomings in its current car. The team has struggled early in the 2026 season after finishing fifth in the 2025 constructors' standings.
Montoya spoke on the F1 TV broadcast after the Austrian Grand Prix, where both Williams cars were knocked out in Q1. Carlos Sainz retired from the race with an electrical issue while Alex Albon finished 17th.
"Unless they start bringing upgrades, no," Montoya said when asked about a possible recovery at Silverstone. He added that the team might have to "go all in and figure it out, upgrade this and even sacrifice next year" to close the performance gap.
Williams sits eighth in the 2026 constructors' championship with 11 points. The British Grand Prix is scheduled for 3 to 5 July at Silverstone.
