NATO to buy GlobalEye surveillance planes from Saab

NATO is set to purchase several GlobalEye surveillance planes from Saab in a multi-billion deal, SVT has learned. The agreement is expected to be presented on Tuesday at an industry forum in Ankara.

NATO plans to replace parts of its fleet of 14 Boeing radar surveillance planes. SVT has learned that Saab’s GlobalEye will replace more than half of the aircraft.

The deal is described as extensive and prestigious. It is to be presented as one of several major defense decisions during NATO’s industry forum held in connection with the summit in Ankara.

GlobalEye was developed by Saab and is installed on Canadian Bombardier aircraft. Sweden, France and the United Arab Emirates have previously ordered the system and Canada has shown interest.

“We refer questions about their interest in GlobalEye to NATO,” says Mattias Rådström, Saab press chief.
