The National Construction Authority has intensified nationwide inspections of buildings violating regulations. This follows at least seven collapses between January and June 2026 that killed 17 people.
The National Construction Authority launched the crackdown on July 1 amid concerns over unsafe structures and unqualified contractors. Officials target projects failing safety standards, especially in Nairobi areas such as Westlands and South C.
NCA Construction Research Manager Meshack Otieno said the authority is developing a building inspection manual based on the National Building Code 2024 with World Bank support. It is also creating repair manuals and mandatory inspection frameworks.
Contractor Enock Ogutu welcomed the effort, noting it is the first major research project at the institution. The measures aim to improve oversight and detect risks early.
