Parents of Bouwer van Niekerk welcome suspect's arrest in murder case

The parents of murdered insolvency lawyer Bouwer van Niekerk have welcomed the arrest of a suspect linked to his killing. They praised the police efforts while calling for those who orchestrated the murder to face justice. The suspect appeared in court on 4 May 2026.

Bouwer van Niekerk, a 43-year-old insolvency lawyer, was shot dead in the boardroom of his SmitSew office in Saxonwold on 5 September 2025. Two men posing as clients carried out the attack, with two accomplices aiding their escape.

One of four suspects, 33-year-old Mukelani Ntombela, was arrested on 29 April 2026 following a police investigation. On Monday, 4 May 2026, Ntombela appeared in Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court facing charges of unlawful possession of a firearm. The case was postponed to 11 May 2026 for a formal bail application, and he remains in custody.

Van Niekerk’s parents issued a statement expressing gratitude to Major-General Mbuso Khumalo, Gauteng deputy provincial commissioner for crime detection, and his team, including Sergeant Tshepo Mosweu. “In a time when we are bombarded on a daily basis with reports of corruption and misconduct within the South African Police Service, it is heartwarming to know that there still are policemen and women who are not corrupt and are dedicated to their work,” the family said.

At the time of his death, Van Niekerk was handling a business rescue for NTC Global, suspected of running a Ponzi scheme fronted by Edwin Thabo Letopa, who collected nearly R500-million from investors. The fund was provisionally liquidated in 2025 after investor complaints. His mother Amy had previously reported death threats linked to his work on the scheme.
