SAFTU calls for urgent probe into activist Letsie's killing

The South African Federation of Trade Unions urged a transparent investigation into the killing of activist Mokoena Letsie during his funeral in Potchefstroom on June 6.

Zwelinzima Vavi, general secretary of the South African Federation of Trade Unions, spoke at the funeral and called for the case to be handled by the Political Killings Task Team. He noted that Letsie’s death followed the recent shooting of another activist, Thato Molosankwe, and highlighted the silencing of those fighting corruption and injustice. Mourners gathered to honour the 44-year-old Letsie, who worked against homelessness and pushed for better services in informal settlements. Speakers including Maulana Lachporia and Bongani Jonas praised his commitment to accountability and community welfare. Letsie is survived by his wife and six children. His daughter Sebabatso said the family is heartbroken but urged focus on his work. Police stated that investigations into the assassination remain ongoing.

Brigadier Abraham Nkhwashu, Sedibeng District Commissioner, testified at the Madlanga Commission on April 22, 2026, denying allegations of aiding his brother-in-law Katiso “KT” Molefe in the investigation into engineer Armand Swart’s murder. Nkhwashu admitted visiting Molefe in prison but described it as a humanitarian act to deliver clothing. He apologised to Swart’s family and called for justice if Molefe is guilty.

The family of Thato Molosankwe said the social activist continued his work against community ills despite knowing the risks. He was killed last week in Mahikeng and buried on Saturday.

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has denied suspended Sedibeng District Police Commissioner Brigadier Abraham Nkhwashu's testimony that he requested police dockets—including for the April 2024 assassination of Vereeniging engineer Armand Swart—via Gauteng Police Commissioner Tommy Mthombeni. Lesufi's office called the claim misleading amid ongoing Madlanga Commission of Inquiry hearings into alleged probe interferences.
