SAFTU calls for urgent probe into activist Letsie's killing

The South African Federation of Trade Unions urged a transparent investigation into the killing of activist Mokoena Letsie during his funeral in Potchefstroom on June 6.

Zwelinzima Vavi, general secretary of the South African Federation of Trade Unions, spoke at the funeral and called for the case to be handled by the Political Killings Task Team. He noted that Letsie’s death followed the recent shooting of another activist, Thato Molosankwe, and highlighted the silencing of those fighting corruption and injustice. Mourners gathered to honour the 44-year-old Letsie, who worked against homelessness and pushed for better services in informal settlements. Speakers including Maulana Lachporia and Bongani Jonas praised his commitment to accountability and community welfare. Letsie is survived by his wife and six children. His daughter Sebabatso said the family is heartbroken but urged focus on his work. Police stated that investigations into the assassination remain ongoing.

The family of Thato Molosankwe said the social activist continued his work against community ills despite knowing the risks. He was killed last week in Mahikeng and buried on Saturday.
