Paul Giamatti and Tatiana Maslany not returning for Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 2

Executive producers of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy confirmed that Paul Giamatti and Tatiana Maslany will not reprise their roles in season 2. The Paramount+ series, renewed before its premiere, has finished filming its second season. New characters, romances, and standalone episodes are planned.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy concluded its first season recently, with producers already discussing season 2 developments. The show earned its renewal at Paramount+ prior to airing, and filming for the sophomore season has reportedly wrapped up, according to TVLine reports from executive producers Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau in interviews with TV Guide, GoldDerby, Collider, and TV Insider. Kurtzman hinted at significant changes ahead: 'In every season, you need to introduce a brand-new element that shakes it up and changes it. And you're going to see the introduction of a character, and some characters, that are really going to shake up our group and send ripples through it that are going to force different kinds of relationships.' He added that unexpected romances will feature among the cast. Landau discussed holographic cadet Sam, noting, 'We really get to live in the fun and the complexity of Sam 2.0 in Season 2... Sam 2.0 does start to experience feelings of attraction for the first time in her existence.' Caleb's storyline will continue, exploring his embrace of a Starfleet officer destiny, as Kurtzman explained to TV Guide. More standalone episodes are expected, with Landau telling TV Insider, 'There's some really big concept episodes in Season 2 that really invoke 'Trek' at its best.' However, Paul Giamatti, who played villain Nus Braka, and Tatiana Maslany, as Caleb's mother Anisha, will not appear in season 2. Kurtzman stated to Collider, 'I will say you will not be seeing them in Season 2.' Their arcs remain open for potential future returns if the series continues.
