Peru to mark 205th Independence Day with Fujimori inauguration

Peru will mark its 205th independence anniversary on July 28, the same day President-elect Keiko Fujimori begins her term. Ambassador Paul Duclos said ties with Korea are expanding into critical minerals, defense and green energy.

In an interview at the Peruvian Embassy in Seoul on July 16, Ambassador Paul Duclos said the two nations are entering a new phase of their 63-year partnership. The 2011 Korea-Peru Free Trade Agreement and the 2012 Comprehensive Strategic Partnership were key milestones.

Duclos noted bilateral trade reached about $2.5 billion in 2025. He said Peru is positioned as a reliable supplier of copper, zinc and molybdenum, while expanding output of lithium and rare minerals.

Peru introduced a new Special Tax and Customs Regime for Private Special Economic Zones in May to attract Korean investment. Duclos also pointed to the $3.6 billion Port of Chancay and growing defense cooperation as fresh opportunities.
