The Pittsburgh Steelers are considering quarterback Brendan Sorsby in the Supplemental Draft next month, which would mark the team's first such selection from the college ranks.
The team has technically made three supplemental picks before, all in 1984 from a special pool of USFL and CFL players. On June 5 that year, Pittsburgh selected receiver Duane Gunn at No. 23, center Tom Dixon at No. 52 and offensive tackle Phil Boren at No. 79.
None of the three played a down for the Steelers. Gunn was released in August 1984 and remained with the Los Angeles Express. Dixon joined the team in May 1985 but left camp in July. Boren stayed with the Birmingham Stallions until his release in January 1985.
The 1984 draft was created to handle rights to players who had signed with the rival USFL rather than enter the regular NFL draft. It operated without the future-pick penalties that apply to today's supplemental selections.
