Swedish police officer dies after assault in Copenhagen

The 32-year-old Swedish police officer Christian Zedig from Eksjö died after an assault during a World Cup event in Copenhagen. Danish and Swedish politicians have expressed sorrow and anger over the incident.

During Tuesday’s World Cup match between Ivory Coast and Norway, violence broke out at Islands Brygge in Copenhagen. Christian Zedig was severely assaulted and later died from his injuries.

Copenhagen police issued a wanted notice for the suspected perpetrator on Friday. The man turned himself in to police and is detained on suspicion of assault. He denies the crime.

The suspect has a prior conviction for serious violence. According to a 2016 ruling, he was sentenced to seven years in prison for attempted manslaughter after stabbing a man in the heart outside a nightclub in Copenhagen.

Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson wrote that his thoughts are with the family. Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said everything is overshadowed by grief.
