Tesla converts former French coal plant into battery farm

Tesla has unveiled a new video highlighting its Autobidder platform at the Chevire battery energy storage site in Nantes, France. The project transformed the grounds of a decommissioned coal power plant into a modern battery installation. Harmony Energy partnered with Tesla on the effort, which marks the first such project for both companies in the country.

The site sits on the location of a coal plant that supplied electricity to much of western France before it closed in the 1990s. Tesla and Harmony Energy converted the area into a battery storage system under a full wrap EPC contract that covered design, engineering, procurement and construction.

Autobidder manages energy trading and optimization for the Megapack installation. The service draws on long-term and short-term forecasts along with real-time data from weather, system information and customer inputs to maximize revenue in wholesale markets and ancillary services.

Tesla teams monitor operations from the site while Harmony Energy staff access updates through offices in London and France. The vertical integration of Megapack hardware and Autobidder software allowed the battery to begin generating maximum revenue immediately after going live.
