Tesla teases official launch in Uruguay

Tesla has signaled its plans to enter the Uruguayan market officially by posting an animated video on its Latin America X account. The clip highlighted the country's map with the message "Estamos llegando," or "we are arriving." This marks Tesla's third official presence in South America.

The announcement came on June 29 when the company shared the short video. Hundreds of Tesla vehicles already operate in Uruguay through grey-market channels, but without official warranties or service support.

An official launch would enable direct sales, maintenance services, and charging infrastructure. Uruguay stands out for its high per-capita income, stable regulations, and renewable-heavy power grid. Government incentives have driven battery-electric vehicles past 20 percent market share.

Tesla recently appointed a country manager for Argentina and Uruguay combined. Regulators have approved three versions each of the Model 3 and Model Y for import from Gigafactory Shanghai. Pricing and timelines remain unannounced, with more details expected in the coming weeks.

Colombia's electric vehicle market grew 304% in April 2026, reaching 5,192 registered units. Tesla ranked as the third best-selling brand in March and entered the top 3 in April. This surge is part of a 54% overall increase in new vehicle registrations through April.

President Gustavo Petro attributed the 171.3% increase in electric vehicle sales in the first quarter of 2026 to his gasoline vehicle tariff policy. In an X post, he hailed the outcome as progress in decarbonization and relief for air pollution-related mortality in cities like Bogotá and Medellín.
