Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey opened to $264.1 million worldwide over the weekend, marking the director’s largest debut to date. The R-rated film earned $124.5 million domestically and $139.6 million internationally across 73 markets.
Universal reported that premium large formats drove a significant share of the results, with IMAX contributing $51.8 million globally. The opening surpassed Nolan’s previous high of $249 million for The Dark Knight Rises.
The film stars Matt Damon as Odysseus alongside Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o and John Leguizamo. It has yet to open in South Korea, China and Japan.
Nolan wrote and directed the adaptation of Homer’s epic poem. The project was the first feature shot entirely with IMAX cameras.
