Three injured Kuki youths shifted from Imphal hospital amid protests

Three Kuki youths injured in a June 15 attack were relocated from Imphal's Regional Institute of Medical Sciences to Churachandpur Medical College on June 17 under tight security following protests.

The youths, identified as 18-year-olds Genlenmang Vaiphei and Paogoulal Chongloi along with 20-year-old Lunliandaw Vaiphei, were moved around 12:15 a.m. The relocation came after protesters gathered outside the hospital following their admission on June 15. Security forces used batons and tear gas to disperse crowds and later foiled attempts to storm the facility.

The three were injured near Leilon Vaiphei village in Kangpokpi district during firing attributed to cadres of the National Socialist Council of Nagalim and the Kamson faction of the Zeliangrong United Front. One of the injured is a footballer who has played for Kolkata’s Mohun Bagan club. Kuki organisations had objected to their treatment at the Imphal hospital due to ongoing ethnic tensions.

Separately, Manipur police reported that security forces killed a suspected militant in an encounter on June 16 in Churachandpur district. Local MLA Letzamang Haokip claimed the deceased was a civilian named Lenminsang and called for an independent probe into what he described as a possible fake encounter.
