Justice Undersecretary Luis Silva announced the government has a plan B to advance expansion of the Rancagua prison if the Santiago 1 project remains blocked by courts. O’Higgins parliamentarians and Rancagua’s mayor rejected the idea due to lack of consultation.
Undersecretary Luis Silva stated on TVN’s Estado Nacional program that the government will defend the Santiago 1 expansion before the Court of Appeals. He added that an alternative would be to advance works at the concessioned Rancagua prison, located on the bypass.
“We have a plan B and it would be Rancagua,” Silva said. The project aims to add nearly 1,200 places in the Pedro Montt area, but the 17th Civil Court of Santiago ordered a halt to procedures.
O’Higgins region deputies questioned the proposal. Fernando Zamorano called it “very serious” in both form and substance, while Juan Luis Castro described it as “an absurdity.” Mayor Raimundo Agliati demanded official information and prior dialogue with the community.
