West Bengal voter list published with 60 lakh names under adjudication

The Election Commission of India has published the electoral rolls for West Bengal on February 28, including 7.08 crore names, with 60 lakh under adjudication due to logical discrepancies. This follows the Special Intensive Revision process and Supreme Court directives. Voters can check their status online or offline to see if their name is verified, under review, or deleted.

In West Bengal ahead of upcoming elections, the Election Commission has published the voter list on February 28 following the Special Intensive Revision (SIR). The list, released in compliance with Supreme Court directives, includes all 7.08 crore names, along with 60 lakh that are 'under adjudication' and names of deleted electors. Judicial officers deployed by the Calcutta High Court will continue scrutinizing 'logical discrepancies' such as data mismatches or potential duplicates, with the list updated in phases.

To check the list, voters can use their name and EPIC number (Voter ID) on the official website eci.gov.in, the State Chief Electoral Officer's website ceowestbengal.wb.gov.in, or the ECI Net app. If verified with no issues, the name appears without any marker; if pending verification, it is marked 'Under Adjudication'; and deleted names are marked 'Deleted'. A senior election official said the list can also be accessed via District Election Officers' websites using the same method. Offline, hard copies are available at Booth Level Officers (BLO) offices.

Soft copies of the list will be provided to representatives of the state's eight recognized political parties, and district authorities will distribute hard copies to their Booth Level Agents. If a name is under adjudication, it means the application is under legal scrutiny by district judges. If a name is missing, voters can check the later supplementary list or submit Form 6 to enroll as a new voter. Names under adjudication may be added to the supplementary list after judicial review.

The Supreme Court has clarified that the February 28 roll is not final, and adjudication will continue to ensure no eligible voter is disenfranchised. Cleared names will be added to supplementary electoral rolls in phases until the last date of nominations for the upcoming polls. To clear adjudication status, original documents may be required, such as Aadhaar card, Class 10 pass certificate, and admit cards. If rejected, a fresh application can be submitted using Form 6.

The process initially involved 270-280 judicial officers, and on Supreme Court directions, the Calcutta High Court has roped in 200 additional officers from neighboring Odisha and Jharkhand. The ECI has not yet announced election dates in Bengal, but the formal schedule is likely to be released in the first or second week of March.

The draft electoral rolls for Puducherry, following the Special Intensive Revision, show more than 103,000 names removed, reducing the total electorate to 918,111. This revision, part of a nationwide effort, identified deceased voters, those who shifted or were absent, and duplicates. Eligible individuals can file claims and objections until January 15, 2026.

Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal stated that provisions to revise electoral rolls are based on the framework created by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. He affirmed the constitutional validity of the SIR for voter rolls. This comes amid discussions on electoral reforms.
