Tameca N. Martin faces charges after allegedly striking and killing pedestrian Calvin Young Jr. with her SUV in a marked crosswalk, then driving away. The incident occurred on March 9 in Milwaukee, with six young children in her vehicle. Police surveillance video captured the crash, showing Young's body thrown about 108 feet.
On March 9 at around 1:40 p.m., Milwaukee police responded to West National Avenue and South 54th Street for a person down in the roadway. They found Calvin Young Jr. pulseless and not breathing; medics pronounced him dead at the scene. Young had been walking in a clearly marked crosswalk illuminated by street lamps, with visible pedestrian signs and no obstacles blocking the driver's view, according to a police probable cause affidavit. Surveillance video showed a Chevrolet Equinox striking Young, propelling his body approximately 108 feet across 54th Street. The vehicle then pulled around the body and drove off without anyone checking on him. Officers linked the crash to a nearby call where a woman with children demanded a ride. They found Tameca N. Martin, 29, half a mile away with a damaged Equinox and six children under age 12 inside; only one was in a car seat, including unsecured 4- and 6-year-olds. A witness overheard Martin on the phone saying, 'I hit the guy he's not moving,' and repeatedly, 'I need you to come get me now. I'm sending my location.' In interviews, Martin admitted driving without a license to a friend's house, looking at her phone GPS due to poor vision and unfamiliarity with the area. She said she noticed Young at the last moment but it was 'already too late,' then panicked, got out briefly but left without checking on him, and smoked marijuana about two hours prior. Martin is charged with hit-and-run involving death and knowingly operating without a license causing death. A judge set $25,000 bond; arraignment is April 20. The case awaits toxicology results.
