Yahoo launches AI-powered search engine Scout

Yahoo has unveiled Scout, a new generative AI 'answer engine' for its search platform, now available in beta. Powered by Anthropic's Claude model, it aims to provide synthesized responses to natural-language queries. The tool is part of a broader intelligence platform integrating AI across Yahoo's services.

Yahoo announced Scout on January 27, 2026, as an AI-driven tool that processes information from the web alongside the company's own data and content. This beta feature responds to users' natural-language searches by generating answers that incorporate interactive digital media, structured lists, tables, and visible links to sources, facilitating easier verification.

The initiative extends beyond search with an 'intelligence platform' rolling out AI enhancements throughout Yahoo's ecosystem. For instance, Yahoo Mail will feature AI-generated summaries, while Yahoo News offers 'key takeaways.' In Yahoo Sports, users can access game breakdowns, and Scout will embed into Yahoo Shopping for insights and shoppable links. Yahoo Finance integration includes populating company financials, analyst ratings, and real-time explanations of stock movements.

Yahoo envisions Scout evolving to deliver more personalized responses and deeper user experiences over time. This move mirrors industry trends, as Google introduced generative AI elements in its search in 2023 and expanded its AI Mode nationwide in the US the following year. Google has similarly woven its AI capabilities into services like Gmail and shopping features.
