Yellow alert activated for strong winds in Mexico City

The Mexico City government issued a yellow alert for all 16 boroughs due to forecasts of winds with gusts over 59 km/h during Saturday afternoon and evening. The action aims to prevent risks such as falling branches and objects. An additional alert was activated for low temperatures in several areas.

The Secretariat of Integral Risk Management and Civil Protection of Mexico City announced the yellow alert covering all capital boroughs, effective from 3:00 to 9:00 PM. Strong winds are expected that could cause trees, branches, tarps, and objects to fall on public roads, as well as damage to urban structures or homes.

To mitigate these risks, authorities recommended securing or removing objects prone to flying, avoiding climbing scaffolds, rooftops, or ledges, and using face masks to protect against airborne particles.

Simultaneously, another yellow alert was issued for temperatures between 4 and 6 degrees Celsius in at least five boroughs: Álvaro Obregón, Cuajimalpa, Magdalena Contreras, Tlalpan, and Xochimilco, during Saturday night and Sunday morning. Recommendations include dressing warmly, covering mouth and nose, avoiding sudden temperature changes, and sheltering pets from the cold.

Regarding air quality, it is reported as acceptable in Mexico City, though poor in some State of Mexico municipalities. Winds with gusts up to 30 km/h could resuspend dust and raise PM10 concentrations, potentially worsening visibility and tinting the sky in gray or brown tones.
