25 people die in road accidents during Christmas

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) reported 25 deaths in 16 accidents on December 23 alone, with 42 drivers arrested and 418 vehicles impounded.

As Christmas festivities continue, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has uncovered widespread violations of road safety rules. Over the past four days, multi-agency compliance checks identified 1,702 violations involving commercial, public service, and private vehicles. Forty-two drivers without licenses were arrested, and 418 unroadworthy vehicles were impounded.

The accidents occurred in counties including Kakamega, Bungoma, Nakuru, Nyeri, Siaya, Kiambu, Nairobi, Machakos, Narok, Kisii, Turkana, and Uasin Gishu. On December 23, 2025, alone, 16 incidents resulted in 25 deaths: eight pedestrians, eight passengers, five motorcyclists, three pillion passengers, and one driver.

Key causes include driving under the influence, absent or malfunctioning speed limiters, operating faulty vehicles, overloading passengers, and lacking insurance or licenses. NTSA has extended condolences to families and urged all road users to follow traffic laws.

"We extend our deepest condolences to the bereaved families and wish a speedy recovery to those injured," NTSA stated. The authority is continuing a joint operation with the National Police Service and the Judiciary to ensure safety during the holiday season.
