Update: Identity confirmed for missing man in El Quimbo viaduct attack; searches ongoing

Searches continue for Jesús Antonio Canizales, the man who jumped into the El Quimbo reservoir during Tuesday's deadly attack on four Caqueteños in Huila. Two others were killed, and a minor escaped to alert authorities. This follows initial reports of the double homicide near the Garzón-El Agrado viaduct.

Following the initial report of a double homicide on the El Quimbo viaduct, further details have emerged about the Tuesday night attack in Huila's Rioloro sector, municipality of Gigante.

Four individuals from Cartagena del Chairá, Caquetá, were traveling in a Toyota Hilux (LUR-121) toward Medellín when intercepted by assailants. The attackers forced a detour to the viaduct between Garzón and El Agrado, where they killed Ovier Martínez Vargas, 51, a local referee known as 'Cuchillo,' and Yineth Soto Sánchez, 40. The gunmen fled with the vehicle, abandoning the bodies.

Yineth's 14-year-old son escaped and notified authorities. Her husband, Jesús Antonio Canizales, 48, jumped approximately 30 meters into the El Quimbo reservoir to flee and remains missing despite extensive searches involving Civil Defense from El Pital and El Agrado, firefighters, and local fishermen—no results as of Thursday.

Huila Police commander Colonel Carlos Eduardo Téllez Betancourt stated: “The National Police is conducting the necessary inquiries to establish the motives... a third person jumped into the El Quimbo reservoir and is currently missing.”

This incident follows a separate homicide hours earlier in Pitalito, where Wilson Alexis Bravo Cabezas was killed, possibly linked to criminal score-settling. While no direct connection is confirmed, both target Caqueteños in Huila, heightening concerns. The Cartagena del Chairá Mayor's Office offered condolences for Ovier's death.
