The Biometric Clave Única de Registro de Población (CURP) took effect on October 16, 2025, across Mexico's 32 states. Though not mandatory yet, its update is recommended for security and locating missing persons. The process is free and available at pilot modules.

On October 16, 2025, as per the Official Gazette of the Federation, the biometric CURP began to apply nationwide, including Aguascalientes, Baja California, Baja California Sur, Campeche, Chiapas, Chihuahua, Mexico City, Coahuila, Colima, Durango, Guanajuato, Guerrero, Hidalgo, Jalisco, State of Mexico, Michoacán, Morelos, Nayarit, Nuevo León, Oaxaca, Puebla, Querétaro, Quintana Roo, San Luis Potosí, Sinaloa, Sonora, Tabasco, Tamaulipas, Tlaxcala, Veracruz, Yucatán, and Zacatecas. Prior to this date, pilots were implemented in four Veracruz municipalities, the State of Mexico, and Mexico City.

The document does not replace the traditional CURP, which remains valid for procedures like educational enrollments, social program affiliations, or account openings. However, by 2026 it may become necessary to streamline processes. Its main purpose is to aid in locating missing persons and security matters, with future plans to include data such as blood type, medical institution, and organ donor status.

The procedure, lasting about 20 minutes, involves scanning all 10 fingerprints, both irises, a photo, and a signature. Currently, it is only available at pilot modules of the National Population Registry (Renapo) and Civil Registries in state capitals. It cannot be processed online immediately, though it is expected to be possible in the future for those with existing biometric data from the Secretariat of Foreign Affairs (SRE), Tax Administration Service (SAT), or National Electoral Institute (INE).

To apply, required documents include an updated birth certificate, valid official ID (such as a voter credential or passport), verified traditional CURP, recent proof of address, and an active personal email. It is free. Minors must be accompanied by a parent, guardian, or tutor with documents proving kinship.

In Mexico City, appointments for the pilot module in Colonia Juárez are scheduled online via the Renapo platform, with availability until October 23. The process includes selecting a date, entering CURP, full name, email, and confirming with a captcha; an acknowledgment is received by email.

X discussions on the biometric CURP rollout express widespread skepticism and privacy concerns, viewing it as potential government surveillance despite official claims of non-mandatory status and benefits for security and missing persons. Users highlight risks from recent hacks, obligatory trámites in 2026, and data centralization. Media shares inform on processes for minors and requirements, with few positive reactions emphasizing fraud prevention.

Claudia Sheinbaum's government unveiled the calendar to register over 134 million Mexicans for the universal health credential, starting March 2, 2026, in 14 states and running through December. The Secretariat of Well-being will deploy 14,000 public servants in modules to handle the process, which includes a protected digital medical file. Registrations will proceed alphabetically by paternal surnames and require basic documents like birth certificate and CURP.

The Secretariat of Well-being began the staggered distribution of the Pension for the Well-being of Older Adults for the January-February 2026 bimonthly period. From January 19 to 23, beneficiaries whose first surname starts with M, N, Ñ, O, P, Q, or R can withdraw the 6,400 pesos deposited in their Banco del Bienestar Card. This support, which increased by 200 pesos from the previous year, adjusts annually for inflation as a constitutional right.
