BJP worker Prasanta Dey killed in Howrah district

A Bharatiya Janata Party worker was killed in West Bengal's Howrah district on June 17 allegedly by a Trinamool Congress deputy pradhan and his associates. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced arrests and compensation for the victim's family.

Prasanta Dey was killed when a mob went to the house of Sk. Mafijul, a deputy pradhan in Santoshpur area of Bagnan in Howrah, to question him about corruption and electoral violence. The BJP workers accompanying him were attacked, and after the murder his wife received a call asking her to remove the body.

Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said eight persons have been arrested and the case handed over to the CID. He promised compensation of ₹9 lakh and a job for Dey's wife.

The Chief Minister announced plans to introduce a law in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly to auction properties of the accused in such cases. He urged people to maintain faith in the police and administration rather than forming groups to confront suspects.
