Reckless car racing at the Imo State University junction in Owerri left one person dead and another seriously injured on Sunday evening.
An eyewitness reported that young people had been holding car racing competitions at the busy junction for some time. The racers struck two passersby during the event, killing one instantly and leaving the second with serious injuries that required hospital treatment.
The eyewitness, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said crowds often gathered to cheer on the racers. The witness questioned why authorities had not stopped the activity earlier.
Residents expressed outrage and called for the arrest and prosecution of those involved. The Imo State Police Command had not issued a statement on the incident at the time of reporting.
