A Chennai Metro train on the Blue Line halted between High Court and Central stations early on December 2, 2025, forcing passengers to walk through the tunnel for evacuation. Services were disrupted for about 30 minutes before resuming at 6:20 a.m. The incident was caused by a battery shutdown, according to officials.
On the morning of December 2, 2025, a technical glitch disrupted Chennai Metro services on the Blue Line. Around 5:45 a.m., a train departed from Puratchi Thalaivar Dr. M.G. Ramachandran Central Metro Station towards Wimco Nagar. Shortly after, it halted inside the tunnel between Central and High Court stations due to a battery shutdown, leaving the train without power.
Passengers were safely evacuated and instructed to walk through the illuminated tunnel to High Court station. A source from Chennai Metro Rail Limited explained: “The train’s battery had shut down, and as a result, there was no power, and it stopped. We tried to switch it on again, but it didn’t work. Hence, we decided to quickly take all the passengers and walk them down within the tunnel to the High Court station. The tunnel lights were available, and hence they could walk. Soon, they all boarded the next train from High Court station to their respective destinations.”
The faulty train was towed back to Central station using another train. Services between the two stations were affected for nearly half an hour. In an official statement, Chennai Metro Rail Limited noted: “Due to a technical issue, the metro train was halted between High Court station and Puratchi Thalaivar Dr. M.G. Ramachandran Central Metro Station. Immediate evacuation was done, and the train has been promptly withdrawn from the line. Normal operations have resumed at 6:20 a.m. We regret the inconvenience caused.”
Later, the train was scheduled to be taken to the Koyambedu depot for repairs. Videos circulating online showed commuters navigating the tunnel, highlighting the unexpected disruption during peak morning hours.
