Egypt marks world migratory bird day with awareness push

Egypt has marked World Migratory Bird Day by reaffirming its commitment to protecting migratory birds and their routes. Activities focused on raising awareness and encouraging public monitoring under the slogan “Every bird counts… your observation matters.” The Ministry of Local Development and Environment led the observance.

Minister Manal Awad highlighted Egypt’s role as a key migration corridor between Europe and Africa. Millions of birds pass through the country each year, using coastal areas and wetlands as rest stops.

Key reserves such as Zaranik, Ashtoum El-Gamil, Burullus, and Ras Mohammed support these species. The government continues monitoring efforts and scientific research through the Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency and partners.

Recent actions include removing 18 kilometres of illegal nets from protected sites and running rehabilitation programmes for injured birds. The ministry urged citizens to document sightings to aid conservation data.

World Migratory Bird Day is observed in May and October to align with seasonal migrations.
