EU and UK sign agreement removing Gibraltar border fence

The European Commission and the United Kingdom signed the Gibraltar agreement today after four years of negotiations. The treaty will enter into provisional application tomorrow and removes physical barriers at the border.

The signing took place in Brussels. Commissioner Maros Sefcovic and UK State Secretary Stephen Doughty signed the text in the presence of Spanish Minister José Manuel Albares and Gibraltar Chief Minister Fabian Picardo.

The agreement consists of 336 articles and more than 600 pages. It establishes a zone of free movement of people and goods between Gibraltar and the Schengen area.

Albares stated that the pact guarantees freedom of movement forever and leaves behind three centuries of distrust. Sefcovic described it as a historic moment benefiting the 15,000 people who cross the border daily.

The treaty will enter into provisional application on 15 July 2026.
