Federal Nigeria Society for the Blind marks 70th anniversary

The Federal Nigeria Society for the Blind (FNSB) has celebrated its 70th anniversary of providing rehabilitation, education, and empowerment for visually impaired Nigerians. Held under the theme 'Vision without Eyes: Striving for Excellence', the event highlighted the organization's enduring mission to foster independence and restore sight where possible.

The anniversary event underscored the FNSB's commitment to equipping blind and visually impaired persons with life skills, vocational training, and opportunities for self-reliance. Established 70 years ago, the Society has operated from its Vocational Training Centre (VTC) in Oshodi, where it has empowered more than 5,000 individuals with education and skills enabling independent and productive lives.

Chairman of the Executive Council, Arit Tunde-Imoyo, delivered an address paying tribute to the founding visionaries and past leaders. She highlighted the organization's dual focus on rehabilitation and sight restoration through its eye bank, which offers hope to those whose blindness can be reversed. "We stand on the shoulders of visionaries who built an institution that has brought light to countless lives. True vision goes beyond physical sight; it is about purpose, resilience, and the ability to turn limitations into possibilities," Tunde-Imoyo said.

She acknowledged the pivotal role of Life President Dr E.O. Akinsete and called for increased involvement from volunteers, professionals, and partners. "We need more volunteers, professionals, and partners to sustain this work. Every contribution tonight is an investment in human potential and a statement that blindness should not mean the end of opportunity," she added.

Executive Secretary Oluwamayowa Oke described the celebration as "a milestone of gratitude and renewal," emphasizing appreciation for past chairmen, council members, staff, and partners. "It is not just about looking back at 70 years of service, it is about celebrating those who made it possible – our past chairmen, council members, staff, and partners. Together, we can ensure that blindness is not a barrier but a story of courage and achievement," Oke stated.

The event reflects the FNSB's ongoing efforts to expand its impact amid challenges in supporting visually impaired Nigerians.
