Ghost in the Cell receives enthusiastic reception at Berlinale 2026

Joko Anwar's horror comedy satire film Ghost in the Cell received an enthusiastic welcome at its world premiere during the Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale) 2026. Tickets for all screenings sold out, and audiences gave thunderous applause along with positive feedback. The film was screened in the Forum program from February 13 to 22, 2026.

Joko Anwar's latest horror comedy satire film, Ghost in the Cell, featured in the Berlinale 2026 Forum program, known for showcasing films with strong cinematic visions, bold forms, and sharp insights into social and political realities. The world premiere drew high enthusiasm, with tickets for all screenings selling out before the festival began on February 13, 2026. During the showing, audiences laughed freely and applauded throughout, followed by a Q&A session where they described it as a masterpiece that is funny, scary, and packed with political and social punches.

Joko Anwar stated, “We wanted to make a film that truly entertains. But when the film ends, there will be thoughts stuck in their heads about the living situation in Indonesia,” in a written statement received by Republika on Monday (February 16, 2026). He added, “This is our most entertaining film right now but also reflective.” In the film, Joko explores supernatural horror elements with a deep focus on characters, rather than relying solely on sets.

Producer Tia Hasibuan expressed relief at the enthusiastic international reception. "This film's story greatly reflects what happens with the dynamics in Indonesia. But seeing the response from audiences outside Indonesia at Berlinale, it turns out this horror comedy satire can also relate to them. Hopefully, this positive reception continues when the film screens in Indonesia," she said. Ghost in the Cell is scheduled to release in cinemas across Indonesia starting April 16, 2026.
