The Hong Kong Jockey Club is planning to build its fourth public riding school on a former landfill site in Tseung Kwan O to shorten waiting times and boost the city's equestrian talent pool. The project has already gained support in principle from authorities, and the club will seek town planning approval in the first quarter of next year before beginning construction by the end of 2027, according to a paper submitted to the Sai Kung District Council. The plan is scheduled for discussion at a council meeting on January 6.
The facility is expected to open in 2030 to address strong demand, with more than 20,000 people currently queuing for spots in the existing three schools and average waiting times lasting several years.
"To cater for the growing demand, the club has decided to open its fourth public riding school in Tseung Kwan O after cautious planning," the paper said.
"Apart from facilitating residents living in the southeastern New Territories, we also hope to shorten the overall waiting time and nurture more excellent equestrians."
This initiative aims to provide better access for residents in the southeastern New Territories while easing pressure on the current facilities in Pok Fu Lam and Tuen Mun.
