IG Kanja appoints Johana Kiplangat Tonui as new GSU commandant

Inspector General Douglas Kanja has reshuffled senior police commanders with immediate effect. Assistant Inspector General Johana Kiplangat Tonui becomes the new General Service Unit commandant. The changes were approved by the National Police Service Board.

Tonui previously served in the Directorate of Operations in the Kenya Police Service. He replaces AIG Fredrick Egesa Nyongesa, who moves to the deputy commandant position at the GSU. Nyongesa holds the Order of the Grand Warrior decoration. AIG Paul Maingo Mumo was also appointed Director of the Internal Affairs Unit. Mumo previously worked in the Directorate of Quality Assurance and holds the Moran of the Burning Spear honour. The moves come days after President William Ruto announced changes to Kenya Defence Forces leadership on June 5. The police changes aim to support preparations for the 2027 polls.
