Indonesia's rice reserves stable at 4.5 million tons amid Middle East turmoil

Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman assured that government rice reserves managed by Perum Bulog remain stable at 4.5 million tons despite Middle East tensions. The statement came during a visit to Bulog Panaikang Warehouse in Makassar, South Sulawesi, on April 5, 2026. He emphasized that national food security is secure.

Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman stated that government rice stocks currently stand at around 4.5 million tons, the highest in Indonesia's republican history. "(Government rice stocks) now around 4.5 million tons. This is the highest since the republic was founded. So, no need to doubt," he said during a visit to Bulog Panaikang Warehouse with Perum Bulog Deputy CEO Marga Taufiq.

The stock surge results from government policies including raising the government purchase price (HPP) for unhulled rice to Rp6,500 per kilogram, a 20 percent cut in subsidized fertilizer prices, and modern agriculture transformation. Amran said President Prabowo's directives boosted rice production in just one year. Stocks have exceeded the 3 million ton warehouse capacity, prompting the rental of an additional 2 million tons of storage.

"Our warehouses are full... In the next 10 days or 20 days, stocks (of rice) will reach 5 million tons," he said. In South Sulawesi, stocks rose from 300,000 tons to 761,000 tons. Amran assured national stocks could hit 6 million tons in two months and suffice for the next 11 months.
