Iyabo Obasanjo, daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, has suspended her bid for Ogun State governorship after Senator Solomon Adeola, known as Yayi, emerged as the All Progressives Congress (APC) consensus candidate for the 2027 election. Governor Dapo Abiodun announced the decision on Monday at a strategic APC caucus meeting in Abeokuta.
Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun announced Senator Solomon Adeola, who represents Ogun West in the Senate, as the APC's consensus candidate for the 2027 governorship election. The decision came on Monday during a strategic caucus meeting of APC leaders and stakeholders in Abeokuta, focused on succession planning.
In a personally signed statement, Iyabo Obasanjo said, “I congratulate him and wish him every success. I also thank the state and national leaders of our great party for the opportunity to participate in the nomination process.” She added, “Based on these developments, I have decided to suspend my gubernatorial aspiration,” and expressed gratitude to her supporters.
The Ogun West chapter of the City Boy Movement, coordinated by Ayodeji Idowu, praised Abiodun's choice in a statement. It hailed the governor's “visionary leadership” and Adeola's “outstanding contributions to infrastructure development,” vowing to mobilize support for him in the election.
The early endorsement is seen as narrowing the field of aspirants and consolidating party support ahead of 2027.
