Jake McCarthy hits leadoff inside-the-park home run for Rockies

Jake McCarthy hit a leadoff inside-the-park home run Sunday against the Giants at Oracle Park. The Rockies fell 3-1 in the game. McCarthy became the first player since 1929 with two such homers in a season.

McCarthy connected on the second pitch from Giants starter Trevor McDonald. He raced around the bases after the ball caromed off the wall in right-center field. Third-base coach Andy González waved him home for the rare inside-the-park homer.

McCarthy had recorded his first inside-the-park home run three weeks earlier against the Pirates. With the feat against the Giants he joined Edd Roush as the only players with two leadoff inside-the-park homers in one season since 1929.

Rockies manager Warren Schaeffer said the play did not surprise him. Teammate Kyle Karros called McCarthy an electric player who provides a spark at the top of the lineup. McCarthy joined the Rockies in a January trade with the Diamondbacks.
