Jolla revives Linux phone with privacy-focused Sailfish OS 5

Finnish company Jolla has announced a new Jolla Phone running Sailfish OS 5, emphasizing user privacy and long-term support. The device, developed with community input, supports Android apps in a sandboxed environment and features a user-replaceable battery. Pre-orders are now open, targeting delivery in the first half of 2026.

Jolla, founded in 2011 by former Nokia engineers after the abandonment of the MeeGo project, first launched a smartphone in November 2013 following a successful crowdfunding campaign. That device ran Sailfish OS, a gesture-based Linux operating system that the company has continued to develop. Over a decade later, Jolla is bringing back the Jolla Phone through another crowdfunding effort, which has already surpassed its goal of 2,000 units booked to enter production.

The new Jolla Phone operates on Sailfish OS 5, designed to respect user privacy by default without tracking or sending data to corporate servers. Jolla promises at least five years of software updates, avoiding forced obsolescence. It supports Android applications via AppSupport in a sandboxed setup, allowing users to run favored apps while optionally keeping the device de-Googled. Hardware highlights include a power button with integrated fingerprint reader for unlocking and a physical privacy switch on the side to disable microphones, Bluetooth, and specific Android apps at the hardware level. The battery is user-replaceable via a detachable back cover, requiring no tools.

Community members influenced key features through voting on aspects like RAM, storage, display, and cameras. Specifications include an unnamed high-performance MediaTek 5G SoC, 12 GB RAM, 256 GB storage expandable via microSDXC, a 6.36-inch Full-HD AMOLED display with approximately 390 ppi protected by Gorilla Glass, a rear camera setup of 50 MP wide and 13 MP ultrawide lenses, a front-facing wide-lens selfie camera, and a roughly 5,500 mAh battery. Connectivity covers Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.4, NFC, and 5G with dual nano-SIM support for global roaming. Dimensions are approximately 158 x 74 x 9 mm.

Available in Snow White, Kaamos Black, and The Orange colors, the phone is priced at €499 for early pre-order supporters (including VAT) with a €99 refundable deposit, while retail prices are expected between €599 and €699. Initial sales target the EU, UK, Switzerland, and Norway, with global compatibility and delivery estimated by mid-2026.

Vad folk säger

Reactions on X to the Jolla Phone announcement are predominantly positive, praising its privacy switch, replaceable battery, European digital sovereignty, and Sailfish OS as an Android/iOS alternative. Jolla reports the first pre-order batch sold out rapidly with strong sales. Tech news accounts share neutrally while users express excitement and curiosity, though some note the price as high.
