Later, with three companions including a French footballer, she headed to the La Ópera neighborhood to wait for a ride-hailing taxi in the early hours of December 8.
According to local outlet La Provence, one of Roa's friends asked a group of men for a lighter, sparking an attack. Roa intervened to help her companion and was injured in the fight, where she knocked down one attacker. Municipal police officers responded quickly, detaining two minors and an adult who appeared intoxicated; a fourth suspect fled.
Medical personnel treated those involved at the scene, but Roa and a companion were taken to the hospital for thorough checkups. After discharge, Roa filed a complaint at the police station. Mayor Benoit Payan confirmed the incident on X: “Ofrezco todo mi apoyo a Mercedes y sus amigos, víctimas de un inaceptable ataque, gracias a nuestros agentes de policía municipal por la rápida detención de los atacantes se debe hacer justicia lo antes posible”.
