Parliament passed the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2026, on April 2, recognising Amaravati as Andhra Pradesh's sole and permanent capital. The bill enjoyed broad political consensus, including support from the Congress party, with only the YSR Congress Party opposing it. It amends the 2014 Reorganisation Act to end capital ambiguity.
Parliament passed the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2026, on April 2. The legislation declares Amaravati the sole capital of Andhra Pradesh, effective from June 2, 2024.
Under the 2014 Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, Hyderabad served as the joint capital for both Andhra Pradesh and Telangana for 10 years. After Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu's NDA government took power in 2014, he designated Amaravati as the new capital.
The YSR Congress Party government, which assumed power in 2019, proposed three capitals: Visakhapatnam as executive, Amaravati as legislative, and Kurnool as judicial. In March 2022, the Andhra Pradesh High Court ruled the capital could not be shifted from Amaravati, a decision challenged by YSRCP in the Supreme Court via a special leave petition now being withdrawn.
On March 28, 2026, the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly passed a resolution urging statutory recognition for Amaravati. The bill amends Section 5(2) by inserting 'at Amaravati'. YSRCP MP P.V. Midhun Reddy said the bill ignores unfulfilled promises on the Land Pooling Scheme, calling for a timeline to compensate farmers.
