PRI deputy Rubén Moreira called for Pemex’s general director to appear before Congress over hydrocarbon spills in the Pánuco River, south of Tamaulipas.
Moreira introduced a point of agreement requiring Juan Carlos Carpio Fragoso to report on the scale of the spills in front of the Francisco I. Madero refinery and the measures taken. The lawmaker warned the damage threatens ecosystems and the livelihoods of fishing families in Tamaulipas and Veracruz.
Pemex stated on June 15 that it is conducting sampling in the Varadero canal and stormwater drains to identify the source. The company said containment barriers remain in place and monitoring has found no free-phase hydrocarbons.
The Navy Secretariat led a working group after the slick was detected. Ciudad Madero’s tourism director said the incident has not affected activities at Miramar Beach.
Journalists from Elefante Blanco reported that Navy personnel forced them to delete footage on June 10 while covering the spill.
