Retired brigadier Mukesh Kumar Joshi killed by stray bullet in Dehradun

A retired Brigadier Mukesh Kumar Joshi was killed by a stray bullet during his morning walk in Dehradun's Rajpur area on Monday. The bullet came from a chase involving men in a car over a bar dispute the previous night. Police have arrested four suspects.

Retired Brigadier Mukesh Kumar Joshi, born in Almora, joined the Army in 1973 and served in conflict zones including the Northeast and Jammu & Kashmir before retiring in 2009. His father, Girish Chandr Joshi, had been Additional District Magistrate in Dehradun.

After retirement, Joshi worked as an advisor with the National Technical Research Organisation (NTRO), a technical intelligence agency under the National Security Advisor in the Prime Minister’s Office, for over four years. He also served in Military Intelligence.

The family moved to Dehradun from Delhi in 2016 following his wife's retirement as senior vice-principal at Mira Model School. His son is a commander in the Indian Navy, currently in Mauritius, and his daughter works in media.

Joshi was walking with his brother-in-law, retired engineer Rakesh Upreti, a routine since moving to Dehradun. Upreti said the accused did not stop at the scene. Police registered an FIR for murder based on his complaint and arrested four accused. Final rites will be held on Wednesday in Dehradun.
