São Paulo Book Fair announces Sandro Veronesi and Latin authors focus

The fifth edition of the São Paulo Book Fair, now official in the city's calendar, announced 56 initial authors from an expected total over 150. Italian Sandro Veronesi returns to Brazil to launch a new edition of 'Caos Calmo', with emphasis on Latin American writers. The event runs from May 30 to June 7 at Praça Charles Miller, in front of Pacaembu stadium.

The Quatro Cinco Um Association, organizer of the São Paulo Book Fair, revealed this week an initial list of 56 authors for its fifth edition, the first as an official city calendar event. The festival will take place at Praça Charles Miller, in front of Pacaembu stadium, from May 30 to June 7, with free programming across three main stages and three literary platforms.

Spotlight falls on Italian Sandro Veronesi, author of 'O Colibri', returning to Brazil less than a year after Flip to launch a new edition of 'Caos Calmo', Strega Prize winner, published by Autêntica Contemporânea. Paulo Werneck, the association's director, emphasized the focus on Latin American writers as an "afirmação da cultura latina pelo mundo"—assertion of Latin culture worldwide.

Confirmed Latinos include Colombian Pilar Quintana with 'Noite Negra' from Companhia das Letras; compatriot Mario Mendoza relaunching 'Satanás' via Planeta; and Mapuche-Chilean Daniela Catrileo with 'Chilco' and 'Piñen'. Brazilians featured are Ana Maria Machado, Hans Christian Andersen winner; Nei Lopes, key figure in Afro-Brazilian culture; and Silviano Santiago, Camões Prize recipient. Others include current bestseller Carla Madeira; Fernando Morais with a Lula biography; and Mariana Salomão Carrara, two-time São Paulo Literature Prize winner.

Last year, the event drew a record 80,000 visitors, with stands from over 100 publishers.
