Sauce Gardner confirms real age amid NFL birthdate mix-up

Indianapolis Colts cornerback Sauce Gardner has confirmed he is 24 years old after years of conflicting reports about his birthdate. The discrepancy stemmed from errors in official NFL records that listed him as born in 2000 instead of 2001.

Gardner made the clarification during the Colts' final day of mandatory minicamp. "I'm 24, by the way," he told reporters. "Yeah, I'm 24."

The confusion arose because sites including ESPN, Pro Football Reference and Wikipedia listed Gardner's birthday as Aug. 31, 2000. In contrast, NFL.com and the Colts listed it correctly as Aug. 31, 2001. The error traced back to the NFL's Record and Fact book, which had carried the wrong year since Gardner's 2022 rookie season with the New York Jets.

Gardner said his passport and driver's license both confirm the 2001 date. An NFL spokesman noted that clubs and players are responsible for verifying such details. The corrected age means Gardner remains under contract through 2029 as a 24-year-old rather than 25.
