South African apps help shoppers cut grocery costs

Two entrepreneurs have launched platforms to help South Africans reduce their grocery bills amid rising prices.

Steffen Burrows, chief executive of Still Good, has introduced The Goods marketplace. It sells short-dated pantry staples, groceries and household items at discounts of up to more than 60 percent. In its first year the company helped shoppers save nearly R6-million through value bags from partners including Pick n Pay and Spar.

Ethan Stander founded the free Grocify app. It lets users compare prices across stores and build shopping lists that update by location. The app also shows prices per 100g to help judge value.

Both services deliver or guide purchases nationwide. Still Good uses more than 2,000 Courier Guy lockers. Grocify highlights that most shoppers prefer the cheapest single-store basket over visiting multiple outlets.
