Five years after the murder of whistleblower Babita Deokaran, South African authorities have secured the final forfeiture of luxury assets worth R326 million from Hangwani Morgan Maumela, a key figure in the alleged Tembisa Hospital tender scheme.
The National Prosecuting Authority’s Asset Forfeiture Unit confirmed the court order on 20 July. It covers six properties, four Lamborghinis, a Bentley Continental GT V8, a boat and trailer. The items had been provisionally seized in August 2025.
Maumela’s companies are said to have extracted more than R400 million through irregular tenders at Tembisa Hospital. Deokaran had flagged the scheme before her murder on 23 August 2021 outside her Johannesburg home.
NPA spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago noted that a National Treasury audit confirmed large-scale corruption. National Director of Public Prosecutions Andy Mothibi said recovered funds will support the Gauteng Department of Health.
AFU head Chuma Mtengwane stated that proceeds will go into the Criminal Asset Recovery Account for appropriate use by the department.
