Thousands form human chain in Es Trenc to protest PP law

More than 10,000 protesters formed a human chain over three kilometers long in Es Trenc, Mallorca, on Sunday to reject the Omnibus Law approved by the Govern on May 26.

The protesters, called by groups including GOB, Terraferida and Menys Turisme, Més Vida, chanted slogans such as “Salvem Es Trenc!”. The demonstration aimed to defend the natural park and other areas of high ecological value against possible regulatory changes driven by the new rule.

Cati Ana Bibiloni, a summer resident, stated that “Mallorca is not an amusement park that politicians can change whenever they want”. Tonina Siquier, vice president of GOB Mallorca, criticized the PP’s “fixation” on deregulating the zone to allow uses such as parking lots.

The Govern rejected the claims. President Marga Prohens said days earlier that the protest was based on “lies” and that Es Trenc “is, has been and will continue to be protected”. Councillor Joan Simonet guaranteed that “not one square meter will be unprotected” and that decree-based management does not mean loss of protection.

Environmentalists argue that the law allows restrictions to be changed by decree without parliamentary approval and fear it could enable future tourist constructions.
