Residents in the Guadalajara Metropolitan Area have reported strong-smelling and discolored water since March. Local authorities have reactivated the Nidos de Lluvia program as an alternative water supply.
Reports affect around 9 percent of colonies in the AMG, with complaints in areas such as Providencia, Americana and El Sauce. Health officials recommended using bottled water for drinking and cooking.
The Nidos de Lluvia program captures rainwater from roofs, filters it and stores up to 2,500 liters for domestic use. Authorities plan to rehabilitate 10 additional wells during 2026 to add 210 liters per second to the system.
By July 12, 7,500 support requests had been received, but only 4,000 families were assisted. Jalisco’s Health Secretariat reported 54,869 gastrointestinal cases through epidemiological week 24, a lower figure than in 2025.
