37 departments placed on red heatwave alert this Sunday

Météo-France has placed 37 departments on red heatwave alert for Sunday. Thirteen additional departments join the 24 already concerned on Saturday.

Météo-France announced that 37 departments are placed on red heatwave alert on Sunday, thirteen more than on Saturday. The new departments include Yonne, Nièvre, Allier, Creuse, Corrèze, Haute-Vienne, Charente, Dordogne, Lot-et-Garonne, Lot, Tarn-et-Garonne, Tarn and Aveyron.

“A mass of very hot air is stagnating over the country for several days, especially from the Centre-West to the Centre-East via Île-de-France, causing a lasting, intense and widespread heatwave episode,” Météo-France explains. In total, 26 million inhabitants are affected by the red alert.

The ninth stage of the Tour de France between Malemort and Ussel has been shortened to 155.5 km due to the weather conditions. The Eiffel Tower closes at 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, while the Louvre and the Musée d’Orsay have advanced their closing times.
