86 percent get their first school choice

Today, 4,381 students in Uppsala municipality received school placement notices for the upcoming autumn term, with 86 percent securing their first-choice school. This represents a one percentage point increase from last year, and overall 95 percent get one of their preferred schools. Nearly all guardians made an active choice in the school selection process.

Uppsala municipality announced today the results of the school selection process for the 2026 autumn term. A total of 4,381 children and students have been assigned places in primary school, including those starting preschool class and those changing schools for grades 4, 6, and 7.

The largest group consists of 2,459 children entering preschool class, followed by 285 students for grade 4, 944 for grade 6, and 693 for grade 7. Fully 99 percent of guardians made an active school choice in all groups.

According to the statistics, 38 percent of guardians applied to one school, 20 percent to two, 27 percent to three, 9 percent to four, and 6 percent to five or more. This allows ranking of both municipal and independent schools.

95 percent of students receive a place at one of the schools they selected, the same proportion as last year. Specifically, it is 96 percent for preschool class, 97 percent for grade 4, 92 percent for grade 6, and 96 percent for grade 7.

For first-choice schools, the figure is 86 percent overall, an increase from 85 percent last year. The proportions per group are 89 percent for preschool class, 88 percent for grade 4, 78 percent for grade 6, and 87 percent for grade 7.

All students have been assigned a school place according to the education committee's regulations. The 5 percent who did not get any of their choices were placed at a municipal school nearest to home, due to high demand or incomplete applications.

"Almost all guardians invited to this year's school selection have made an active choice. Guardians can apply to and rank as many schools as they want, both municipal and independent. This increases the chance of getting a place in a school that the guardian wants for their child," says Caroline Sedin, unit manager for admissions and placement in Uppsala municipality.

"It is positive that the majority of students get a place in a school they have chosen and that so many also get their first choice," she adds.

Guardians wishing to swap schools can apply during two periods: by May 10 with notice on May 25, or from May 11 to August 2 with notice on August 10.
