Addis Ababa advances traffic management efforts

Addis Ababa city administration's traffic management authority is working collaboratively to implement traffic control befitting the city. It focuses on protecting traffic flow amid ongoing corridor and green development works. Traffic accidents decreased by 87 percent in the 2017 budget year.

The Addis Ababa city administration's traffic management authority is collaborating with stakeholders to implement traffic control measures suitable for the city. Spokesperson Ato Negatu Dagachew told Fana Digital that efforts are underway to safeguard various traffic flows.

Recognizing Addis Ababa as Africa's Medina, the authority has prioritized implementing appropriate traffic management. Over the past six months, it has cracked down on illegal construction, land grabbing, illegal trade, disturbances, illegal advertising, and begging. Ongoing works on corridors and green developments in the city are being protected through coordinated traffic flow measures.

In the 2017 budget year, traffic accidents fell by 87 percent from previous levels, with notable success against illegal construction, land grabbing, and illegal trade. Preventive actions and public awareness campaigns have significantly contributed to these outcomes, according to officials.

Emphasizing modern traffic management, the authority is training staff in behavioral analysis and human resource development. More than 8,000 officers have received training at the Ethiopian Police University on technology, human rights awareness, behaviors, good governance, and anti-corruption measures. This training aims to equip officers to manage the city's growth and expand administrative capacity.

To make Addis Ababa a clean and beautiful city for its residents, the authority calls on the community, institutions, and other stakeholders to play their roles in protecting traffic flows.
