Amit Shah urges coordinated action for Yamuna rejuvenation

Union Home Minister Amit Shah chaired a review meeting on Monday and called for Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana to adopt a coordinated plan to rejuvenate the Yamuna River.

Amit Shah chaired a high-level review meeting on Monday regarding the rejuvenation of the Yamuna. He urged the three states to follow a coordinated action plan instead of a fragmented approach. Union ministers along with Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and senior officials from the three states attended. Shah called for ensuring a standard ecological flow in the river. He noted that 129 sewage treatment plants have been completed across the states while 59 more are to be built by 2027. Officials were directed to monitor pollution indicators including biochemical oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand and total suspended solids, with project progress to be reviewed every 20 days. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi and the National Dairy Development Board will sign a memorandum of understanding to divert dairy waste to biogas and manure plants. Shah reported that 97 percent of the targeted 28.57 lakh metric tons of silt has been removed from drains, with the remaining work scheduled for completion by June 15. He directed that the extracted silt be used in manufacturing and construction projects.
